The slowing global economic recovery continues to discourage Taiwan's business outlook
TIER business composite indicators offer mixed signals
The global demand is still relatively weak, as the US seems to be the only economy that is on a rather certain recovery track. As for other major economies, China is likely to hit a soft landing. Japan's traditional exports engine is losing steam. In addition, the European economy remains sluggish and may be further impacted by the “Brexit” in June. Taiwan's exports order and value have been consecutively declining. Although the manufacturing and construction composite indicators issued by the Taiwan Institute of Economic research (TIER) both went up somewhat in April, the service composite indicator dropped for the first time after 4-month consecutive increase.
Taiwan's exports in April 2016 decreased by 6.5% compared with the same month last year. The decline in exports was a 15-month consecutive y-o-y drop. Regarding imports, Taiwan's imports in April also dropped by 9.6% compared with imports in April 2015. From January 1 to April 30 this year, Taiwan's exports and imports gave a trade surplus of US$ 16.96 billion or a decrease by 0.7% on a y-o-y basis.

Power supply tight amid hot weather: Taipower
The peak-hour operating electricity reserve rate hit a low of 2.7 percent on Monday due to high temperature, significantly driving up power consumption, for the second-lowest level of its kind ever recorded, according to statistics released by the state-run Taiwan Power Company (Taipower). The operating electricity reserve amount reached only 920,500 kilowatts, running close to the warning level of 900,000 kilowatts. Should the reserve amount fall under the warning level, then a power rationing is likely, said Cheng You-tsai, deputy director of Taipower's Department of System Operations. Cheng said that the hot weather came one month earlier than in past years, leading to a tight power supply situation. "The lower the operating power reserve rate, the higher the possibility for a power shortfall and consequent rationing," Cheng stressed. He said that Taipower will endeavor to maintain stable operation of its power generation units, so as to keep the operating electricity reserve at over 1 million kilowatts/hour.
