Cross-strait cooperation
On December 22, 2009, Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Chairman Chiang Pin-Kung and his Chinese counterpart Chen Yunlin, president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), formally signed three agreements on fishing cooperation, agricultural quarantine inspection, and industrial product standards, inspection and certification. These three agreements signified the completion of the fourth round of cross-strait talks resumed after President Ma Ying-Jeou took office in May 2008.

The ongoing ECFA
Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-Shiang said at a seminar held on December 27, 2009, that the proposed cross-strait economic cooperation framework agreement will not follow the CEPA (Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement) model, and the round of negotiation will be highly open and transparent. Shih also promised that the government will not put the agreement into practice before gaining approval from the Legislative Yuan.
