Prospects of a double dip recession persists in June
Both manufacturing and service sector surveys were cautious
Taiwan’s external sector continues to sore as global outlook recovers. Exports saw an eighth month year-on-year rebound in June with exports soared by 34.1% or USD 22.73 billions. Imports for June reflected the increase in export demands as well as new investment initiative, which was a 40.4% increase year-on-year. With the surging import, trade surplus has been reduced significantly from the previous and reached USD 1.41 billions in June. Cumulative export data for the first six months of 2010 saw an increase of 49.2% YoY, or USD 131.98 billion, with a cumulative trade surplus of USD 12.10billion, USD 3.59 billion less than the same period in the previous year. TIER released new manufacturing indicators
On August 9th 2010, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research released new manufacturing indices which reflect the economic climate of the 71 individual manufacturing industries. The new manufacturing indicators could provide more insights into the local manufacturing sector.


APEC Food Security Forum kicked off in Taipei
The first food security forum of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) inaugurated in Taipei on August 18th 2010. The forum kick-started a discussion on establishing a regional food security mechanism, a pressing issue in light of the global climate change, said Chen Wu-hsiung, the head of the Council of Agriculture (COA), who organized the forum. According to the COA, 95 delegates from some 20 economies attended the three-day meeting.
