Global recovery offers further optimistic outlook
TIER adjust its forecast for this year upward again |
The US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) adjusted its Q1 estimate of the US GDP growth upward by 0.1 percentage points the second time. The Chinese economy has again exceeded the market expectation with a significant growth of 6.9% for the first half of 2017. With that growth ratio, there's neither hard landing nor soft landing for the time being. In addition, the Bank of Japan further adjusts its forecast for this year's Japan economy upward. In conclusion, the global recovery has offered further optimistic outlook. Accordingly, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) adjusts its outlook for Taiwan's economy; Taiwan's GDP is predicted to grow by 2.08% this year.
Taiwan's exports in June 2017 increased by 12.97% compared with the same month of 2016; that grew by 8.43% in May y-o-y. Regarding imports, Taiwan's imports in June 2017 increased by 3.7% compared with imports in June 2016, whereas that grew by 10.2% y-o-y. From January 1st till the end of June this year, Taiwan's exports and imports gave a trade surplus of US$ 22.84 billion or a decrease by 5.28% on a y-o-y basis.
Taiwan's consumer price index (CPI) went up by 1.0% in June 2017 compared with the same month of previous year. The current inflation rate has gradually moved back up compared with previous months. ...Read more |

| Taipei Universiade ad draws international attention |
| The Universiade-themed interior design featured in some Taipei Metro trains have attracted attention of foreign media. "Fancy a "swim" or a game of basketball in the Taipei Metro?" The Singapore-based Strait Times asked in its report of the ad. "Now you can - thanks to the help of some realistic 3D artwork that has transformed a six-car subway train into six different sporting venues," the newpaper report. "There is a swimming pool, a football pitch, a baseball diamond, a basketball court, a running track and a field for throwing sports." The car with the swimming pool venue, which looks like a real water surface, has proven to be the most popular with commuters and tourists on social media, Strait Times said. Several commuters, decked out in swim gear, have also been spotted taking advantage of the Instagram-worthy photo opportunities, the paper continued. The artwork was also covered by the CNN, which interviewed the local water sports athlete Hsu Tzu-Hsiung who took photo of himself "swimming" in the metro car. (source: The China Post) |
